Dorthea

Dorthea is a self-proclaimed eccentric. The show is set in the 80’s so I wanted to include the vibrancy of the time while also including a bit of whimsy.

Final Costume

I wanted her to have the appearance of layers so I pinned up the dress and sewed it into place. I added squares of colorful chiffon fabric that made the dress feel more flowy and less formal

I layered multiple chiffon scarfs to make her silouhette more dramatic as this character uses her arms a lot when talking. The scarves, paired with an excess of gold jewelry, made for a very eccentric design

Artie

Artie, the adult daughter of Dorthea, is very reserved in her attire. She rejects everything about her mother and in attempt to further herself as much as possible from her mother. Artie is a biochemist and I wanted to reflect that professionalism in her outfit.

Final Costume

I wanted Artie to contrast with Dorthea as much as possible and since I put Dorthea in strictly cool tones, I put Artie in strictly warm tones. I also made her outfit more reserved and plain.

There are flashbacks in this play and Artie is the hardest character to portray younger due to the nature of the play. In order to make this distinction easier, during flashbacks, Artie sheds her jacket to giver her outfit a more youthful look.

Echo

Echo, the teenage daughter of Artie, loves spelling bees and spends most of the play trying to get her mother (Artie) and her grandmother (Dorthea) to come together and get along.

Final Costume

Since Echo is meant to be the bridge between Artie and Dorthea, I chose a shirt with both warm and cool tones so as to represent the melding of the other two characters

I wanted to dress Echo with the same whimsy of her grandmother while showing a bit more restraint. As Echo is more focused on words than clothes I don’t believe she would have the amount of accessories as Dorthea but she would make up for it with patterns.
